Shetland was of strategic importance during the first and second world wars. A reminder of it’s war time history is the number of mines strewn around its coastline. Shetland is also the resting place of Britain’s largest shipwreck: RMS Oceanic. She was serving as an armed merchant cruiser when she hit the shoals between Foula and the Shetland Mainland.
